Creditors will range from suppliers and vendors to independent contractors, consultants, utility companies and any variable of expenses incurred when running a company. Large corporations will often have a dedicated Accounts Payable department, with a number of administrators of clerks whereas smaller companies may have one individual charged with managing all Accounts Payable.

The Accounts Payable role is vital to the success of the company. Many industries including manufacturing, retail, construction must purchase and pay for stock and inventory in order to facilitate and operate their business. Therefore Accounts Payables management of the current and long term liabilities are essential in determining the financial position of the business. An accurate and efficient Accounts Payable person or team can significantly help in increasing a company’s profits.

The Financial Controller or Director will expect Accounts Payable to review, verify and process invoices as well as clarify any unusual or questionable invoice items or prices. Furthermore the Accounts Payable will be required to reconcile accounts payable transactions, produce monthly reports, maintain accurate historical records and most importantly maintain confidentiality of organisation.

Accounts Payable Administrator / Clerk Education / Qualification Requirements:

An entry level Accounts Payable role will likely require minimum GCSE grades of A*-C in Maths, English and Science. Whilst obtaining A-Levels or a degree isn’t mandatory for an Accounts Payable role, the ability to understand basic bookkeeping and accounting skills is required. Accounts Payable Professionals who do hold bachelor's degrees or those that take further qualification and certification in finance can advance to other branches of the accounting profession.

The average salary for an Accounts Payable professional is £25,000 per annum, however this will vary on experience, location and scope of role.
